Coconut oil is commonly used to moisturize dehydrated skin because it isn’t irritating to most skin types, and it is easily absorbed. It can even be used on your hair as a deep conditioner.

Different Types of Coconut Oil and How They’re Made

Virgin coconut oil and refined coconut oil are the two main types of coconut oil. The difference between the two is primarily the way they are made. Virgin coconut oil may contain more antioxidants since it is made from fresh coconuts.

Refined coconut oil is made from dried coconut meat. It may contain “extra” ingredients such as bleach and chemical solvents, so be sure to check the label if you want a more natural option.

Cold-pressed coconut oil tends to retain more of its natural nutrients since heat is not used in the extraction step. Expeller-pressed coconut oil was made by using heat or steam. If you want healthy and nutrient-rich coconut oil, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil is your best bet since it has been processed the least.

 DIY Moisturizer

Many moisturizers contain coconut oil, but you can also make your own quite easily.

Here’s a simple recipe for luxurious whipped coconut oil:

 • 16 ounces of coconut oil

 • 10-30 drops of your favorite essential oil

Just throw the coconut oil into your mixer and whip, add your essential oils if you want and then mix until incorporated.

You can store your coconut oil moisturizer in a glass jar or other container and apply it to dry skin when needed. It’s very simple yet effective.

There’s something very nourishing about using coconut oil on your skin. It feels good to use something so close to nature to remedy skin that needs a little TLC.
